Dry Fly Hackle Grading Standards

Supreme
A Supreme neck will have a glossy sheen to it. A heavy feather count with a complete range of sizes from the largest to the very small often into size 24 and smaller. Each feather is extremely long with short uniform fibers extending from the stem with each fiber very stiff with a minimum of web. The hackle stem is supple and thin allowing complete flexibility without the problems of cracking and breaking giving you the maximum number of wraps and a densely hackled fly.

Extra Select
This neck also has a glossy sheen. A heavy feather count with complete range of sizes from large to small. Each feather is extremely long with short uniform fibers extending from the stem with each fiber very stiff with a minimum of web. The hackle stem is supple and thin allowing complete flexibility without the problems of cracking and breaking giving you the maximum number of wraps and a densely hackled fly. On occasion you may find a few feathers with broken tips. Excellent to tie with, just slightly shorter.

Select
This neck also has a glossy sheen. The feather count may be less than what you may find on an Extra Select neck. A complete range of sizes from large to small, however you'll probably find fewer 22s and smaller. The hackle stem is supple and thin allowing complete flexibility without the problems of cracking and breaking giving you the maximum number of wraps and a densely hackled fly. The feathers have stiff barbs and a minimum of web. On occasion you may find a few feathers with broken tips. Excellent to tie with, just slightly shorter.

Choice
This neck also has a glossy sheen. The feather count may be less than what you may find on an Extra Select neck. A complete range of sizes from large to small, however you'll find few feathers smaller than size 20.
