James Twitchell teaches English and advertising at the University of Florida. His writing is very witty and accessible and provides the best introduction to the subject I have found. He contends that consumerism acts in our culture as religion does in others. The only book that I have read so far is:

Benton, John. Christians in a Consumer Culture: Escaping the Cult of "Choice" Invading Your Life 1999.
This is a very accessible and helpful book, and very manageable at 175 pages. Benton, who is a pastor in the U.K., surveys key themes such as individualism, shopping, the role of the media, freedom and commitment. Throughout he contrast the call of a Christian to live differently, according to Christ's calling and way of life.
