Always remember that you are absolutely unique. Just like everyone else.   -Margaret Mead

I think people who go to a psychiatrist ought to have their heads examined.   -Jane Ace

Id give my right arm to be ambidextrous.

Its easier to suffer in silence if you are sure someone is watching.

         Modesty is my best quality.

       Jack Benny

Thanks to Patti Kocich, PT, physical therapist for the Richmond group, for this joke:

Jay and his blonde wife live in Buffalo. One winter morning while listening to the radio, they hear the announcer say, We are going to have 3 to 4 inches of snow today. You must park your car on the even numbered side of the street, so the snowplow can get through. Jays wife goes out and moves her car.      A week later while they are eating breakfast, the radio announcer says, We are expecting 4 to 5 inches of snow today. You must park your car on the odd numbered side of the street, so the snowplow can get through. Jays wife goes out and moves her car again.

The next week they are having breakfast again, when the radio announcer says, We are expecting 10 to 12 inches of snow today. You must park, then the electric power goes out.

Jays wife says, Honey, I dont know what to do. Jay says, Why dont you just leave it in the garage this time?

Every man should be born again on the first day of January. Start with a fresh page. Take up one hole more in the buckle if necessary, or let down one, according to circumstances; but on the first of January let every man gird himself once more, with his face to the front, and take no interest in the things that were and are past. Henry Ward Beecher

The Old Year has gone. Let the dead past bury its own dead. The New Year has taken possession of the clock of time. All hail the duties and possibilities of the coming twelve months!

ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE.  An erroneous E-mail that circulated in 2001 concerning free roadside assistance in Texas has recently resurfaced. The toll-free line 1-800-525-5555, which is printed on the back of most Texas drivers licenses, has been operated by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) for several years for motorists to use when reporting non-life-threatening situations on Texas roads and highways. DPS passes the information along to the appropriate local police agency or DPS office. (In the event of an emergency call 911.) The DPS does not send out a tow truck at the States expense, as promised in the E-mail. If a tow truck is dispatched, the motorist is responsible for any costs incurred. Some cities and agencies do have courtesy patrols and roadside trucks to provide non-towing services, and they may be dispatched by the local agencies when appropriate.

Customers of participating wireless companies-ALLTEL, Nextel, Cingular Wireless and Verizon Wireless-can dial *DPS (*377) free of air time charges anywhere in Texas and receive roadside assistance for non-emergency situations. Examples of when a motorist should call the Roadside Assistance Hotline include: stranded with car problems, hazardous road conditions, debris in the roadway, suspicious activity at a rest area, and obviously intoxicated or dangerous drivers.  ~

TIPS FOR HEALTHY AND HAPPY AGING

Sarah Malcolm

1.      You can expect to enjoy mental alertness throughout your life. Most of the mental ability that is lost is due to lack of use, not age. Do crossword and other word games, write a journal (diary), read books and newspapers, play solitaire.

2.      Exercise. It has been said that exercise seems to be the closest thing to a fountain of youth. Do all you can, as often as you can.

3.      Eat a balanced diet. Parkinsonians seem to crave sweets, so try to substitute fruit for candy and pastries. Drink lots of water and tea. You probably need some vitamin and mineral supplements.

4.      Be careful. Remove obstacles that may cause tripping. Have grab bars properly installed. Always wear your seat belt. Have your walker or cane adjusted to the correct height.

5.      Maintain contacts with family and friends.  Avoid trying to make them feel guilty for neglecting you. Dont make your aches and pains your main topic of conversation.

6.      Keep personal and financial records in order. Plan ahead for your future financial and housing needs. Make your wishes known to your loved ones.

7.      Consider a pet. Pets can keep you from being lonely, make you laugh, and give you a reason to get up in the morning. Dont get an animal that you cant take care of.

8.      Laugh. Maintain a sense of humor. There is usually something funny in any situation.

9.      Make the most of each day. If you welcome each day with joy, youll never feel old. You will keep on growing and receiving new opportunities to enrich your life and the lives of others. Stay active in the community. Consider volunteer work, and use your time and skills to help others. Involve children in your life.

10. Dont hold grudges. The time to reconcile with your family and friends is NOW. Its of no value to plan to apologize to others and fail to do so. Think how much happier you will be without a guilty conscience.

11. Write your own epitaph. If you cant think of anything positive to say about your life, youd best get busy and put more meaning into it. How do you want to be remembered?
